The bears in Robert Bissell’s universe seem to lead lives as complex and thought-filled as those led by humans. Sometimes playful, sometimes entranced by swirling butterflies or floating dreamily in a quiet lake, sometimes contemplating a far-off horizon, the bears draw us into their world and invite a closer look. Not by chance, the artist has often posed his beatific subjects in attitudes familiar from South Asian and Native American spiritual iconography. A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, Bissell is represented by galleries in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, Oregon, and Virginia, as well as a gallery in France.
